SEO for Tour Operators: An Honest Guide to Expectations
What search data actually tells you, and what it doesn't. Using real figures from a real engagement.
What the numbers looked like
In our winter ski case study, Google Search Console showed the following for the measured period:
- 539 total clicks: visits from organic search
- 62.9K total impressions: times the site appeared in search results
- 0.9% average CTR: the share of impressions that became clicks
- Average position 14: roughly page two of Google
These are real, unglamorous, mid-journey numbers, and they're genuinely useful. Here's how to read them.
Impressions mean you're in the game
62.9K impressions says Google considers the site relevant for a meaningful volume of ski-activity searches. That's the foundation everything else builds on. No impressions, no opportunity.
Position 14 means headroom, not failure
An average position of 14 puts most appearances on page two, where few travellers click. That's why the CTR is 0.9%. This isn't a verdict on the business; it's a roadmap. Moving from position 14 to position 6 typically multiplies clicks far more than any copy tweak, because it moves you onto page one.
SEO compounds. It doesn't spike.
Unlike ads, which stop the day you stop paying, organic visibility builds month over month: content, reviews, local signals and authority stacking up. But it takes months, not days. Any agency promising page-one rankings in weeks is selling fantasy.
And one more honesty note: in the winter ski engagement, SEO was one part of a combined system. The 712 leads for the season came from Reels, WhatsApp, website improvements, SEO and Google Ads together. We don't pretend search did it alone.
The same logic now applies to AI search
Travellers increasingly ask AI assistants for recommendations ("best beginner ski lessons near…"). The disciplines are the same: clear, structured, trustworthy content about your experiences. That is what AEO/GEO work builds on. Early movers here have an advantage, just as early SEO adopters did.
The takeaway
Treat SEO as infrastructure, not a campaign. Start early, measure honestly, and pair it with channels that convert today (like well-targeted ads and instant enquiry response) while organic visibility compounds.
