A strong operation lost in a crowded market
Alpine downhill skiing and snowboarding is the most competitive winter market in Europe. Dozens of operators sell similar experiences on the same mountains, and most travellers default to the big platforms and OTAs they already know.
This business had quality instruction, good equipment and strong local knowledge. But in a market this crowded, quality alone does not win the booking. Visibility and trust do.
Competing against everyone, including the platforms
Three problems, the same ones we see across most tour and activity businesses:
- Platform dependence: too many bookings came through intermediaries taking a cut, instead of direct.
- Commodity perception: to a researching traveller, one ski school looks much like another. Nothing differentiated the experience.
- Seasonal compression: the entire year's revenue had to be won in a few winter months.
Out-market the mountain
The strategy was a full marketing system, not a single channel:
- Paid advertising across Google and Meta: capturing high-intent searches ("ski lessons [resort]", "snowboard instructor") while inspiring planners on social.
- Social media marketing: slope footage, instructor personalities and guest moments, building the following that books direct.
- Differentiation content: showing what made this operation different instead of competing on price.
- Direct booking push: every campaign drove travellers to book direct, cutting platform commissions.
A season of compounding visibility
Campaigns launched pre-season to capture early planners, the travellers who book the best weeks first. Creative rotated through the season: powder days, progression stories, family moments. Retargeting recovered the researchers who compared options and left. Social content kept the brand in front of past guests for repeat bookings and referrals.
874 bookings and strong revenue in one season
Generated in a single winter season through ads and marketing, alongside strong revenue growth as reported by the client.
What changed:
- Direct won over platforms: campaigns drove travellers to book direct instead of through intermediaries.
- Differentiated in a commodity market: content gave travellers reasons to choose this operation over lookalikes.
- Revenue followed bookings: the client reported significant revenue growth for the season.
We report the booking figure exactly as the client reported it. No specific revenue total has been added beyond what the client confirmed.
The takeaway
In crowded alpine markets, the winner is rarely the best operator. It is the best-marketed one. A full advertising system turns a commodity listing into the obvious choice.
